NNPP Criticizes Yusuf On His Defection
The New Nigeria Peoples Party has criticised the exit of Kano State governor Abba Yusuf, saying his decision undermines the mandate given to him by voters and weakens the trust built during the last election.
The reaction came on Friday from the party’s national leadership in Abuja, where its spokesman said the governor rose to office through years of loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya Movement and strong public backing across Kano State.
The party dismissed Yusuf’s claim that internal crisis forced his departure, describing the explanation as baseless and an afterthought that does not reflect the current state of the organisation.
Drawing lessons from history, the party recalled the early 1980s when a sitting governor defected with most elected officials but was rejected at the polls, arguing that voters often punish political disloyalty regardless of the numbers involved.
The NNPP urged residents of Kano and its supporters to remain calm and united, insisting that the party still enjoys strong grassroots support and confidence in principled leadership, despite the setback caused by the governor’s exit
