Obi Raises Alarm Over Attack On Democracy
In Cross River State, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the disruption of the African Democratic Congress secretariat opening in Bakassi Local Government Area.
He described the incident as “an attack on democracy itself.”
The development followed the invasion of the venue by suspected political thugs who disrupted the ceremony and damaged property prepared for the event.
Reports said the attackers scattered party supporters and destroyed canopies, loudspeakers, chairs and other equipment at the gathering.
Reacting to the incident, Obi warned that the growing tolerance for political violence and misconduct could endanger the country’s democratic system.
He said the continued acceptance of fraud and disorder in politics could create a dangerous future for Nigeria.
The police in Cross River later confirmed the disturbance and described those involved as hoodlums, adding that officers were deployed to restore calm in the area while investigations continue.
