The Nasarawa State Police Command has refuted viral reports alleging that students of St. Peter’s Foundation Secondary School in Rukubi, Doma Local Government Area, were abducted on Friday.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, said in a statement that the widely circulated accounts on social media and some news platforms were false and did not represent what actually happened.
According to the police, the alarm was raised after some students heading to the school field for their Physical and Health Education class saw armed hunters nearby and fled out of fear, assuming they were kidnappers. Their teachers later brought them safely back to the school.
Nansel explained that the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, immediately deployed a combined team of police officers and military personnel to the area after the initial distress call.
He stated: “Upon arrival, it was discovered that the pupils had sighted some hunters carrying Dane guns and, out of fear, fled, mistaking them for kidnappers. The area was thoroughly combed, and normalcy was immediately restored.”
The school proprietor also confirmed during questioning that no abduction occurred, describing the panic as a false alarm. Security personnel have continued surveillance in the area to prevent any threat.
The police urged the public to ignore the circulating reports and advised journalists to verify information properly to avoid causing unnecessary tension.
According to the statement, the claims were simply “rumour unworthy of publication as factual news.”
