Power Talks Collapse At Edo Government House
A high-level meeting called by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to tackle the lingering blackout in the state ended abruptly on Tuesday at the Government House in Benin.
The session had brought together officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company and members of a civil rights group pushing for better power supply.
The gathering was meant to find lasting answers to prolonged outages and complaints of unfair billing.
The group, Organized Edo Against BEDC Oppressions, said it honoured the governor’s earlier request to nominate representatives after he met protesters during a recent demonstration.
Speaking after the stalled talks, the group’s convener, Emmanuel Ogbidi, said they were ready for serious engagement but the meeting was cut short due to the governor’s urgent engagement.
Other members accused the distribution company of failing to fix faulty transformers while residents bear repair costs and still face estimated bills.
Despite the delay, the activists said they remain hopeful that the rescheduled dialogue will bring relief to electricity consumers across the state and end what they described as years of poor service.
