Residents Struggle As Fuel Price Climbs
Residents of Awka and nearby communities in Anambra State are facing rising transport fares after petrol prices climbed sharply across the state.
Commercial bus drivers and tricycle operators increased their charges as filling stations raised the pump price of fuel.
The situation unfolded on Monday as checks at several petrol stations showed prices ranging between N1,300 and N1,500 per litre. Some motorists said the same product sold for about N1,150 earlier in the morning before rising rapidly later in the day.
As fuel prices climbed, transport costs also surged, forcing many passengers to either pay the new fares or walk long distances.
Short trips that previously cost between N200 and N300 now go for about N500, while the journey from Aroma in Awka to Onitsha has risen to around N2,000 from about N1,000.
The rising costs have also pushed up food and market prices, deepening the pressure on residents already struggling with living expenses.
Many fear the situation could worsen as traders adjust their prices and motorists rush to fuel stations amid concerns over possible supply shortages.
