Senate Push For Additional 2027 Election Budget
The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters is asking for an extra N30 billion for the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This comes after INEC proposed N873 billion for the nationwide exercise.
Lawmakers say the additional funds are needed to improve logistics and strengthen preparations for the polls.
They believe the increase will help the commission tackle expected operational challenges and ensure smoother coordination across the country.
Earlier, INEC presented a proposed N873.78 billion budget for the 2027 elections, far above the N313.4 billion released for the 2023 polls.
The commission also requested N171 billion for its 2026 activities, including bye-elections and off-cycle contests, stating that the N140 billion provided so far is not enough.
The rising figures have sparked debate over funding efficiency and transparency, as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections.
Stakeholders are calling for proper oversight to ensure the funds are used responsibly.
