Tinubu Approves New Election Law
President Bola Tinubu has signed the amended Electoral Act into law, clearing the way for new rules to guide future elections across Nigeria.
The signing took place in Abuja after the bill was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
The legislation introduces fresh provisions on the transmission of election results, allowing both manual and electronic methods.
Lawmakers had earlier debated the changes, with civil society groups and opposition figures pushing for mandatory electronic transmission in real time.
The National Assembly eventually adopted a hybrid approach, following deliberations between the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The revised law is expected to shape preparations for the 2027 general elections.
With the President’s assent, the Independent National Electoral Commission will now work within the updated legal framework as political parties and stakeholders begin early planning for the next polls.
