Tinubu Stops Mass Firing Of Over 30 Senior Police Officers
President Bola Tinubu has halted a planned retirement of about 30 senior police officers following the exit of Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector-General of Police and the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting IGP.
The move came amid preparations to ease out several Deputy Inspectors General and Assistant Inspectors General in what is usually a routine shake-up after leadership changes.
Sources within the Presidency said the mass retirement was stopped to allow the new acting police chief to rely on the experience of top officers.
An internal list had reportedly included senior figures in finance, logistics, ICT and training who were expected to leave in order to maintain command structure.
Disu’s appointment has revived debate over the long-standing practice of forcing out senior officers when a junior is elevated above them.
His emergence came barely two months before his scheduled retirement at age 60, raising fresh questions about tenure rules under the amended Police Act.
The controversy also links back to a court ruling that declared compulsory retirement based on internal policy unlawful.
A National Industrial Court judgment earlier voided the forced exit of a senior officer and ruled that retirement must strictly follow statutory age or years of service.
That decision continues to shape the tense atmosphere within the Force as leadership changes unfold.
