President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Commonwealth to make history by awarding the 2030 Centenary Games to Africa for the first time, with Nigeria as the host nation.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, Tinubu noted that in the 100-year history of the Games, no African country has ever hosted the event.
“It is time for Africa. After 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, they have never been hosted on African soil,” he wrote.
Describing Nigeria as “the gateway” and Africa as “the stage,” the President called on the Commonwealth to use the 2030 milestone to demonstrate that every region within the bloc is valued.
“By bringing the Commonwealth Centenary Games to Nigeria in 2030, you will send a powerful message that every region of the Commonwealth matters, and that Africa is not only part of the story, but central to its future.
“Let us make history together in 2030. Let us complete the circle of Commonwealth unity. The dream must be realized. The time is now,” Tinubu added.
If Nigeria secures the bid, it would mark the first time the Games are held on African soil since their inception in 1930.
