Umahi Commends Local Contractors On FG Projects
Minister of Works David Umahi has commended Nigerian construction firms handling federal highway projects, saying their performance shows the growing capacity of local contractors in the country.
Umahi spoke during an inspection of ongoing work on the Calabar corridor of the President’s legacy road programme.
He said several indigenous contractors have continued construction even before receiving mobilisation funds from the Federal Government.
According to the minister, at least eight local contractors working under the Federal Ministry of Works are currently executing projects without upfront payments, demonstrating commitment to national development.
Umahi explained that the corridor is part of a 465 kilometre highway project designed to link southern Nigeria to the Federal Capital Territory and improve economic connectivity across regions.
He said the first section of the project covers about 125.5 kilometres and is valued at roughly ₦454 billion. The road is being built using concrete pavement technology, which he said could last up to 100 years with minimal maintenance.
The minister also revealed that about 11 kilometres of dual carriageway have already been completed along the corridor, while major bridge structures are under construction.
Umahi added that the highway forms part of four major legacy infrastructure projects being implemented by the Tinubu administration to improve transportation networks across the country
