Violence Disrupts ADC Defection Party Switch
An attack on new members of the African Democratic Congress unfolded on Saturday in Alimosho, Lagos, during a gathering meant to receive defectors from the Labour Party.
The incident disrupted the event and forced party members to flee for safety.
The violence broke out when a large group of hoodlums stormed the venue in the Idimu area, overpowering attendees and attacking those in sight with weapons.
Several people were injured before organisers hurriedly relocated the programme to another centre in Egbeda to continue the defection.
Party officials later said police intervention worsened the situation, as security operatives reportedly sealed off the second venue shortly after the attackers left.
They claimed earlier attempts to secure approval for the event had stalled, leaving the gathering exposed.
Reacting to the incident, an ADC leader in Lagos described the attack as a threat to democratic rights and accused authorities of failing to protect lawful political activities.
He warned that repeated interference and violence against opposition supporters could weaken public trust in the democratic process.
