Why Federal Schools Can’t Pay Salaries- ASUU
Some federal universities in Nigeria were unable to pay lecturers their full January salaries due to challenges linked to the transition to a new payroll arrangement, according to the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The situation affected several institutions across the country.
Christopher Piwuna, president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, spoke on the issue while addressing concerns from lecturers who received incomplete payments for the month.
He said the problem emerged during the process of implementing the recently renegotiated agreement between the union and the federal government.
The agreement was signed on January 14 after years of delays and was intended to address recurring disputes that have led to repeated strikes in Nigeria’s public universities.
The deal forms part of efforts to improve conditions for lecturers and stabilise the academic calendar.
Piwuna explained that the adjustments connected to the new agreement affected salary processing in some institutions, leading to partial payments for January.
He added that steps are being taken to resolve the issue and ensure lecturers receive the outstanding balance.
