Wike Declares Work Free Day For Polls
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has declared Friday work free and imposed a movement ban ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
The Minister, Nyesom Wike, announced that movement will be restricted from 8pm on Friday until 6pm on Saturday across the FCT.
The decision was made public during a broadcast on national television and radio on Thursday.
Wike called on residents to turn out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice in the election of chairmen and councillors across the six area councils.
He explained that the work free day, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is to allow residents travel to their communities and prepare for the polls. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the movement restriction during the stated hours.
Wike also commended the President for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, saying it would strengthen the electoral process.
He urged residents to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully, expressing hope that credible leaders would emerge from the exercise.
