Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has emphasised the critical role of a railway network in driving economic growth and improving trade within the region.
Speaking while receiving a delegation from China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd on Wednesday, Otti revealed that discussions were already underway with the Akwa Ibom State Government to construct a rail line linking both states jointly.
According to him, the proposed rail connection would strengthen commercial and cultural ties between Abia and Akwa Ibom, creating new opportunities for business and regional development.
“The last time I spoke with my colleague in Akwa Ibom State, he expressed interest in connecting Akwa Ibom to Abia because of our trading and cultural relationship,” Otti said. “It’s something your company may want to look into. There’s already a design in place — you can review it and make improvements.”

Governor Otti also invited the Chinese firm to participate in the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park (AIIP) located in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area, and to support the revival of dormant industries across the state.
He disclosed that the feasibility study for the Azumini Seaport project was nearing completion and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with China Harbor Engineering Company to develop the seaport.
In response, the Managing Director of China Harbor Engineering Company, Jason Wang, expressed the company’s readiness to collaborate with the Abia State Government on its key infrastructure projects.
