Cameroon’s goalkeeper André Onana has been surprisingly excluded from the national squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), one of the most notable absences in the list announced ahead of the tournament.
The Trabzonspor keeper, a regular for the Indomitable Lions in recent years, was left out by the newly appointed head coach, David Pagou.
Alongside Onana, longtime captain Vincent Aboubakar has also been omitted from the travelling squad to Morocco.
In a positive move, Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo has been included, adding firepower to Cameroon’s attack as the team prepares for the competition starting on December 21.
This follows the sacking of coach Marc Brys and the arrival of David Pagou, an experienced Cameroonian coach and physical education teacher.
Pagou’s selections have stirred debate among supporters and pundits, with many seeing the changes as part of a wider plan to rejuvenate the team and bring fresh energy.
Cameroon, a five-time AFCON winner, aims to reclaim its continental supremacy after recent disappointing results.
During Marc Brys’ leadership, Cameroon failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
