The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress says the state Chief Judge must obey a court order that halted moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The party said the stance came after reviewing the steps taken by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The position was announced by the APC faction led by Emeka Beke through its spokesman, Darlington Nwauju. The group accused some lawmakers who claim loyalty to the party and the President of actions that threaten party unity and political balance in the state.
The party acknowledged that the House of Assembly has the power to begin impeachment proceedings under the constitution. It, however, warned that the current approach by the lawmakers goes beyond acceptable limits and risks misuse of legislative authority.
According to the APC, the impeachment move could damage the party’s future in Rivers State if allowed to continue. It said the situation has the potential to weaken internal cohesion and harm the party’s image among voters.
The party called on the Chief Judge to respect the interim court injunction that bars him from acting on the Assembly’s resolutions. It also urged the national leadership of the APC to intervene quickly and use internal party measures to prevent further crisis and protect the party’s interests.
