ASUU Opposes FG – UK Education Deal
In Nigeria, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has rejected recent education agreements between the Federal Government and the United Kingdom.
The union raised concerns over plans to expand foreign academic presence in the country.
The criticism centres on a proposal to establish Coventry University in Nigeria.
ASUU argued that such moves could weaken local universities and shift focus away from fixing existing challenges in the sector.
The union warned that prioritising foreign institutions may worsen issues like poor funding and infrastructure in public universities.
It insisted that government efforts should be directed at strengthening domestic institutions instead.
The development adds to ongoing tensions in the education sector, as stakeholders debate reforms and partnerships ahead of broader changes in Nigeria’s university system.
