Former Vice President and key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared his willingness to step aside for a younger, dynamic, and widely accepted presidential candidate for the 2027 election, provided the candidate emerges under the ADC platform.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, Atiku said his participation in the race is driven not by personal ambition but by a desire to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” he stated.
Atiku also urged younger Nigerians to engage actively in politics, assuring them of his full support if one of them is chosen to contest the presidency.
Addressing speculations about his personal ambitions, he clarified that he is not desperate for the nation’s highest office, emphasizing instead that his goal is to “rescue Nigeria from the people that have held it hostage.”
