Bauchi Makes Childbirth At Clinics Compulsory
The Bauchi State Government is planning a new law that would require pregnant women to deliver their babies in recognised health facilities rather than at home.
The move comes amid growing concern over the number of home births across the state.
The plan was revealed during a two-day policy meeting involving state and local government officials and lawmakers focused on improving maternal, newborn and child healthcare, alongside nutrition and reproductive health services.
Discussions centred on reducing preventable deaths linked to childbirth.
Health authorities explained that many expectant mothers register for antenatal care but later choose to give birth at home, a pattern officials say increases risks for both mothers and babies.
The trend has become a major concern for primary healthcare managers in the state.
The proposed legislation is part of wider efforts by the state to strengthen healthcare delivery, encourage safer births and reduce complications during labour.
Officials believe compulsory facility-based deliveries could improve survival rates and overall maternal health outcomes.
