Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor announced this on Wednesday at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.
According to reports from a correspondent in Bayelsa, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abraham Ngobere, together with 18 PDP lawmakers, also submitted their resignations from the opposition party.
Governor Diri’s departure from the PDP occurred just 24 hours after his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
At the time of this report, Governor Diri has yet to reveal his next political step.
The PDP has so far lost three governors to the APC this year, and with this recent development, the opposition party now has eight governors remaining.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Daniel Alabrah, has also confirmed the news in a post on his verified social media account.
