Disturbing reports from Ozoro Kingdom in Delta State say women and girls were molested, assaulted, and in some cases raped during a local festival on Thursday.

Normally, women are expected to stay indoors during parts of the celebration, but this year no official guidance was issued, leaving residents vulnerable.

Videos circulating online show youths forcibly stripping a woman, fuelling public anger and fear in the community.

Many women, including students of Delta State University, Ozoro, were reportedly warned to remain indoors to avoid attacks. Sources allege multiple cases of abuse, though authorities have not yet confirmed all incidents.

The Delta State Police described the acts as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights” and said an investigation has been launched.

The Commissioner of Police has promised that those responsible will be identified and prosecuted, urging witnesses to come forward.

Officials stressed that cultural events should never be used to cover criminal acts and urged festival organisers to implement measures to protect participants.

Security agencies are reviewing videos to track down perpetrators and prevent a recurrence.
