The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has placed Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, on its blacklist over what it described as media repression.
The IPI also blacklisted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, citing persistent police harassment and assaults on journalists.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during the organisation’s Annual Conference in Abuja, which was attended by Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
The President of the IPI, Musikilu Mojeed, explained that the governors and the Inspector General of Police have continued to suppress media freedom, hindering journalists from performing their lawful duties.
He therefore stated, “Mohammed Umar Bago, Niger Governor, Umo Eno, governor of Akwa Ibom and the IG of Police, Kayode Egbetokun are hereby written in the book of infamy.”
