Players and officials of the Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) fixture, citing unpaid match bonuses.
The situation was revealed on X by sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco.
Nigeria, considered one of the top-performing sides in the ongoing tournament, has so far won all four of its matches and recorded the highest goal tally. The team is scheduled to face Algeria in the quarter-final tie of the 2025 AFCON on Saturday evening.
However, it was gathered that bonuses for the four matches already played have yet to be paid. The team, led by coach Eric Chelle, defeated Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage, before securing a 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16.
In reaction to the outstanding payments, both players and members of the technical crew have reportedly suspended all travel and training arrangements.
This development marks the team’s second strike action over unpaid bonuses within three months. During the November 2025 international window, the squad also refused to train ahead of a crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon, although that disagreement was resolved within 24 hours.
