Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has stirred reactions after stating that footballers who retire without financial security should be jailed.
The 35-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from international football, shared his views on athletes’ welfare via his official X account, urging players to plan ahead while still earning.
“Footballers, start saving for your future from day one. No matter how small your salary is, put something aside for your retirement,” Ideye advised.
Responding to a follower who argued that players — especially those who played in Europe — have no excuse to go broke, Ideye bluntly replied: “They should be jailed for life if, after they retire from playing, they can’t feed themselves.”
Ideye’s comments have sparked debate on financial discipline among professional athletes and the responsibilities they bear to secure their future.
