DSS Rearrest Malami’s Son At Kuje Prison
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) rearrested Abdulaziz, son of former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after an attempt to remove him from the facility outside official procedures.
The incident occurred when court bailiffs arrived with fully processed bail documents, but Malami reportedly insisted that his son be moved discreetly, bypassing standard protocols.
Security agencies, acting on intelligence reports, had placed the prison under tight surveillance, monitoring all vehicles and movements in and out of the facility. DSS operatives intercepted Abdulaziz shortly after he was handed over to those facilitating the quiet release.
Abdulaziz, along with Malami and his fourth wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, faces multiple charges in a Federal High Court in Abuja, including conspiracy, laundering, and procuring funds from unlawful activities totaling over ₦8.7 billion. Court filings allege that Malami used corporate entities and property deals to conceal the origin of public funds while in office.
The EFCC has listed properties, companies, and Bureau De Change operators allegedly linked to the laundering, with witnesses prepared to testify about multi-million-naira transactions and intelligence reports that triggered the investigation. Despite these allegations, all three defendants have pleaded not guilty, forcing the case into full trial proceedings.
Tensions at Kuje Prison have been high since early January, with over 50 DSS operatives deployed around the facility to prevent any attempts to bypass legal protocols. The rearrest underscores ongoing scrutiny of Malami and his family in connection with one of Nigeria’s largest money laundering cases in recent years.
