Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed reports claiming he endorsed a specific region or candidate for Nigeria’s 2027 presidency. He labelled the stories as falsehoods designed to mislead the public.
The rumours circulating on social media suggested that El-Rufai, now a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stated that the South should produce the next president and that he favoured Peter Obi over Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement released on Monday via his verified X (Twitter) account, El-Rufai clarified that he never made such remarks and urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified claims.
He emphasised that the viral reports are baseless and that he has never expressed such views in any speech, interview, or post. He also noted that his genuine opinions are only shared through his official verified channels.
El-Rufai condemned the practice of attributing opinion pieces written by others to him, even when he shares those articles on his platforms.
Criticising irresponsible political behaviour and the misuse of social media to circulate misinformation, he called on journalists and the public to verify facts before sharing or publishing stories.
He warned that society suffers when media professionals fail to fact-check and instead propagate false narratives.
El-Rufai concluded by advising the public to trust only statements directly from his official social media accounts or interviews with credible media outlets.
