President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a five-member Nigerian team to attend the funeral of Jesse Jackson, the American civil rights leader who died at 84 on February 17, 2026.

The delegation will convey Nigeria’s condolences to the Jackson family and represent the government at the final rites.

The team is led by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Other members include the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Special Presidential Envoy for Global and Pan-African Affairs, Brian Browne; and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaye, Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs.

Jackson’s funeral began on February 26 with a lying-in-state at his Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters in Chicago, followed by additional services in South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

The final homegoing service is set for March 7, closing days of tributes from the U.S. and international leaders.

The Nigerian delegation highlights Jackson’s decades-long advocacy for racial justice, African liberation, and global human rights, as well as his close ties with African leaders.

His campaigns included support for Nelson Mandela’s release and efforts against apartheid in South Africa.
