El Rufai Release For Mother’s Burial Sparks Legal Debate
In Abuja, lawyer Deji Adeyanju reacted after Nasir El-Rufai was allowed to leave Independent Corrupt Practices Commission custody to attend his mother’s burial.
He said the decision was humane but raised legal concerns. The development followed reports that the former governor was briefly released for the funeral.
He said the gesture showed compassion but must follow due process.
According to him, “The decision to grant Mallam Nasir El-Rufai temporary release from Independent Corrupt Practices Commission custody to attend his mother’s burial is both humane and commendable but must be backed by a court decision or order since he was remanded in custody on the order of the court.”
He stressed that any such move must align with the law.
He explained that the action reflects a balance between justice and humanity.
He noted that authorities can still show empathy while enforcing the law.
Adeyanju also warned against wrong interpretations of such actions. He said, “Bail, whether administrative or judicial, should not be misconstrued as an escape from accountability, but rather as a lawful and compassionate accommodation in deserving circumstances.”
He maintained that acts like this can build trust when done within legal limits.
