Ex Commissioner Challenges Kano Govt To Court
A former Kano State commissioner, AVM Ibrahim Umar (Rtd), has taken the state government to court over the seizure of an official vehicle allocated to him while in office.
The suit, filed at the National Industrial Court and marked NICN/KN/14/2026, lists the Attorney General of Kano State and two others as defendants.
The dispute followed a directive issued after the reported defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress, which triggered the resignation of several commissioners.
A circular dated February 16, 2026, instructed outgoing officials to return government vehicles.
The ex-commissioners replied a day later, arguing that such vehicles form part of their conditions of service under the 2023 Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission Act.
Counsel to Umar later alleged that operatives linked to the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission entered his home to retrieve the vehicle, an action the legal team described as unlawful and distressing to his family.
They are demanding details of those involved and the return of the vehicle within 48 hours.
State officials have rejected the claims, maintaining that official vehicles remain government property and can be recalled at any time.
A senior official said the cars were allocated in May 2025 and had not reached the period required for auction or transfer, adding that past practices do not bind the present administration.
The court is now expected to decide whether the vehicles are personal entitlements or state.
