FG And GenCos Clash Over Debt
The Federal Government of Nigeria and power generation companies have disagreed over the actual size of debts in the country’s electricity sector.
In Nigeria, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the government’s liabilities to GenCos may be around N4 trillion, challenging the widely mentioned N6.3 trillion figure within the industry.
The disagreement follows ongoing efforts to reconcile debts between the government and electricity generation companies, which have long complained about unpaid obligations affecting operations.
While GenCos maintain that the debt is much higher, government officials argue that a proper review will present a lower and more accurate figure.
The outcome of the reconciliation is expected to shape future payments and could affect stability in the power sector, which continues to face funding and supply challenges.
