FG Freezes New Shipping Tariffs
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council has directed shipping companies to suspend the newly approved tariffs following complaints from key players in the sector.
The decision came after growing pressure from operators and industry groups over the planned increase.
According to the council, all shipping lines and their agents must maintain the current charges while talks continue.
The government said the move is to allow wider consultation and ensure a fair agreement for everyone involved in the maritime and logistics industry.
Officials said a final decision will only be announced after discussions with stakeholders are completed.
The council added that the suspension is aimed at preventing tension within the sector and protecting the interests of businesses affected by the charges.
The development follows protests by freight forwarders and customs brokers, who recently picketed Mediterranean Shipping Company over the tariff increase.
The government has now opened talks with stakeholders as it works toward a resolution.
