FG Implements ASUU Allowance Increments
The federal government has begun implementing key parts of its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, starting with a 40 percent increase in allowances for lecturers.
The agreement, signed on January 14, was reached after months of talks between government representatives and ASUU leaders. It is aimed at ending the cycle of strikes that has repeatedly disrupted academic activities in public universities.
In a statement released on Monday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the government has approved a 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for ASUU members. He confirmed that the increment takes effect from January 1, 2026.
Alausa said the move shows the government’s commitment to honouring the agreement and improving the welfare of university lecturers. He added that the implementation is part of broader efforts to stabilise the academic calendar and restore confidence in the public university system.
The renegotiated deal was concluded in 2025 and covers several welfare and funding concerns raised by ASUU over the years.
