FG Speaks On US Military Presence
The federal government says United States military personnel currently in Nigeria are not combat troops but advisers invited to support national security efforts.
The clarification follows reports of a US military presence linked to counterterrorism operations in the country.
According to the government, the American personnel are in Nigeria at Abuja’s request and are providing intelligence, training and technical support to Nigerian security forces.
Officials stressed that their role is strictly advisory and does not involve direct fighting.
The government explained that the collaboration is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen local capacity in tackling terrorism and insecurity. It added that such partnerships are common and guided by Nigeria’s sovereignty and security priorities.
Authorities urged the public to avoid misinformation, noting that the presence of foreign advisers is meant to improve effectiveness, not replace Nigerian forces. The government maintained that control of all operations remains firmly in Nigerian hands.
