Property worth millions of naira was destroyed on Saturday afternoon after a fire outbreak swept through a residential building in Abuja’s upscale Asokoro area.
The fire affected four out of five blocks of three-bedroom flats located on Nelson Mandela Street, with the property said to belong to former Zamfara State governor and senator, Ahmed Yerima.
The blaze reportedly started from solar panels installed on the rooftop of the building at No. 13 Nelson Mandela Street before rapidly spreading across the structure.
A statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, confirmed that the incident was reported at about 1pm, triggering an immediate emergency response.
Speaking further, the Head of FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, Monday Addie, disclosed that the four affected flats were completely consumed by the fire.
He explained that household items including furniture, clothing, food supplies and other personal belongings were destroyed in the inferno.
Addie noted that prompt intervention by emergency responders prevented loss of lives and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Emergency teams from FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the FCT Police Command were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire and secure the area.
