Former Super Eagles Star Dies At 62
Former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62.
The passing of the Imo State born footballer was announced on Saturday morning by his former teammate and fellow 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Segun Odegbami.
Odegbami revealed that Nwosu had spent several days in hospital before his death.
He said, “Henry Nwosu passes on!, “After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote.
Nwosu was the youngest member of the Nigerian squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, a historic victory that gave the country its first continental title on home soil.
He became widely admired for his creativity, vision and skill in midfield during his playing career.
After retiring from football, Nwosu remained active in the sport as a coach and mentor. He spent years guiding younger players and contributing to the growth of domestic football in Nigeria.
