The Concerned Citizens of Igbo Nation in Diaspora (CCIND) has urged the United States to impose sanctions on Nigeria, citing ongoing human rights abuses and the illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group accuses Nigeria of defying international law and court rulings, including a 2022 Nigerian Court of Appeal decision and a 2025 Kenyan High Court ruling, both ordering Kanu’s release. CCIND also highlighted a Canadian Federal Court’s August 2025 designation of Nigeria’s ruling parties as terrorist organizations, linking them to electoral fraud and violence, notably in the 2023 presidential election. The group calls for Nigeria’s re-designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and demands Kanu’s immediate release, IPOB’s deproscription, and an internationally supervised referendum for Nigeria’s indigenous peoples. “The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is a prisoner of conscience that every conscientious world leader and democratic government must exercise their influence on the Nigerian government to let him go without condition,” said CCIND spokesperson Emeka Livingstone.

Kanu’s detention since June 2021, following his controversial rendition from Kenya, has drawn global condemnation. Despite court rulings declaring his detention and trial unlawful, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) continues to hold him, escalating tensions with IPOB supporters and diaspora groups. CCIND’s demands include U.S.-led investigations into Nigerian officials implicated in the Canadian ruling, alongside sanctions like travel bans and economic restrictions. Analysts warn that Nigeria’s defiance of legal rulings risks further isolating the country diplomatically, as diaspora advocacy intensifies in North America and Europe.
