Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Saturday rescued a man who sustained serious injuries after a fully loaded six-tyre truck plunged off the Oshodi Bridge, heading toward Mile 2, following an alleged brake failure.
The truck, identified with registration number AKD 135 YK, was reportedly transporting toner printing materials when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle lost control while descending the Oshodi-Oke Bridge and crashed into the ditch beside the terminal below.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the quick intervention of LASTMA personnel prevented what could have turned into a major tragedy.
According to him, the operatives arrived at the scene within minutes, rescued the injured victim, and swiftly restored normal traffic movement in the affected area.
“The injured man was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment, while the driver of the truck was apprehended and handed over to security personnel from Makinde Police Station, Oshodi, for further investigation,” he said.
He explained that the accident scene was cordoned off to prevent secondary crashes, and the wreckage was cleared to ease the flow of traffic.
Reacting to the situation, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bakare Oki, commended the officers for their prompt and professional response, describing their effort as a reflection of the agency’s dedication to public safety and efficient emergency management.
Oki appealed to motorists, especially heavy-duty vehicle drivers, to prioritise proper vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to safety regulations, particularly during the ember months when road accidents are more common.
He further revealed that LASTMA had strengthened its round-the-clock traffic management operations across Lagos by deploying recovery vehicles and emergency response units at key locations to ensure a rapid reaction to road incidents.
“Our officers remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property and to keep Lagos roads safe before, during, and after the festive period,” Oki assured.
