Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has honoured Yakurr-born Miracle Usani, a defender for the Super Falcons who helped Nigeria win the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with N50 million, a plot of land in Calabar, and an appointment as the state’s Sports Ambassador.

The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a reception at his office in Calabar, praising Usani’s achievements and her contribution to women’s football and national pride.

“We are thrilled to have you here today. Your determination and spirit are truly inspiring. You have shown that what a man can do, a woman can do even better. You are now a symbol of pride for Cross River, Nigeria, and Africa,” Otu said.

Recalling his own experiences as a youth athlete, the governor highlighted the resilience required in sports and reiterated his administration’s commitment to developing the state’s sports infrastructure.

“Our sports system faces structural challenges, but with stories like yours, the future looks bright. Sports is no longer just a pastime; it is a serious commercial venture. Your success should motivate other young people in the state,” he added.

Presenting the gifts, Otu said, “We have allocated N50 million and a plot of land in Calabar for you. You are now on our VVIP protocol list, and as Sports Ambassador, you will represent the state at official events.”

Usani, who also represented Nigeria at the 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup and plays for Edo Queens F.C., expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared her journey to football stardom.

“My journey wasn’t easy. Growing up, people said girls who play football become masculine and won’t get married. There was no female team in Uke, so I played with boys. But I stayed determined. Today, I’m proud to represent Nigeria and Cross River at the highest level,” she said, dedicating her achievements to God, her parents, and the people of Cross River State.

Governor Otu encouraged continued support for young athletes, promising ongoing investment in talent development to produce “many more Miracles” from the state.
