Funke Akindele has once again made history in Nollywood as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, became the first Nigerian movie to surpass ₦2 billion at the box office.
FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor, confirmed on Monday via X that Behind The Scenes has now grossed ₦2,103,039,706, describing the achievement as “breaking and shattering records.” The milestone also makes the film the highest-grossing Nollywood release in Africa and the top-performing Nollywood title in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The distributor praised Akindele for her remarkable track record, noting that she is now the highest-grossing writer, director, and producer in West African cinema. FilmOne further highlighted that she has topped the African box office for three consecutive years, a feat unprecedented in the region’s film industry.
Thanking moviegoers for their support, the distributor said the film’s success represents “more than a commercial win but a cultural movement,” driven by audience loyalty and strong word-of-mouth.
Before reaching the ₦2 billion milestone, Behind The Scenes had already crossed ₦1 billion and later climbed to ₦1.77 billion, establishing itself as one of Nollywood’s most successful films of all time.
The film stars Scarlet Gomez in the lead role and features an ensemble cast including Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’, Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and other prominent actors, blending established stars with emerging talent to deliver a blockbuster cinematic experience.
