Goodluck Jonathan Proposes Solution For Election cases
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the National Assembly to reform Nigeria’s election dispute system by creating a Constitutional Court to handle such cases.
Jonathan said the current process, which moves from tribunal to the Court of Appeal and then the Supreme Court of Nigeria, is too slow.
He argued that a single specialised court would speed up decisions and reduce delays in political cases.
He recalled past disputes where election outcomes were overturned on technical grounds, noting that while some reforms have been made, the system still takes too long to conclude cases.
He stressed the need for quicker resolution to protect the credibility of elections.
Jonathan pointed to models used in some Francophone African countries, where constitutional courts handle electoral disputes in one stage.
The event was attended by Bola Tinubu, represented by Wale Edun, and former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
