The Federal Government has announced plans to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign to curb illegal migration among Nigerian youths.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the German Giessen-Friedberg Chambers of Commerce. The delegation is in Nigeria to promote legal labour migration.
Dingyadi said the move aims to encourage young Nigerians to take advantage of lawful labour migration channels instead of embarking on dangerous journeys abroad.
“We are trying to put in place an efficient publicity to discourage people from going into that and to show them why we should not go into illegal migration because facilities are being provided for legalising this migration, and if we do it both of us stand to benefit from this exercise,” the minister said.
He expressed delight at meeting the delegation again within a short period, noting that the partnership would help strengthen legal labour migration and vocational training opportunities.
The minister praised the chambers for initiating the pilot phase of the Dual Vocational Training Programme involving 18 young Nigerians who will soon be deployed to Germany.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s large youth population, saying many are eager to acquire skills and engage in productive employment.
“Please, I encourage you to do more in this area because we have so many young men and women out there looking for skills so that we can reduce the level of unemployment in our country,” he added.
Meanwhile, the leader of the German delegation and CEO of the Chambers, Dr Matthias Leder, said they were visiting to formally invite the minister to the unveiling of the 18 Nigerians selected for the vocational training in Germany.
“We have already started this prototype. Out of 300 young Nigerians, we invited them to participate in a two-stage competition and selected 18, who are now learning German. The good news is that they have passed the most difficult stage – the A1 level of German – and we are going to celebrate them on November 12 in Lagos. We are here to formally invite you to the occasion,” Leder stated.
He further explained that the Chamber’s goal is to reduce illegal migration through dangerous routes that put young Nigerians’ lives at risk.
According to him, Nigerians who wish to migrate to Germany should focus on learning the German language to qualify for the country’s dual vocational training opportunities.
