Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is stranded in Guinea-Bissau after a military coup took place on Wednesday.
Jonathan, along with hundreds of foreign observers, has been unable to leave the country. He had travelled to Bissau ahead of the elections, which have since been held, but official results are still pending. Many who rushed to the airport to escape following the coup remain stuck.
A day after the two main candidates—President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Fernando Dias—both claimed victory, a group of military officers seized “total control” of the country.
Calling themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” they suspended the electoral process “until further notice.”
The military also shut all land, air, and sea borders and imposed an overnight curfew.
