Kano Assembly Hit By Mass Defection
In Kano State, the Speaker of the House of Assembly and 21 other lawmakers have resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, marking a major political shift within the state legislature.
The development was confirmed on Sunday through a statement issued by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.
The defections involve the Speaker and ranking members of the House, including principal officers, who jointly decided to leave the NNPP. According to the statement, their action was taken in solidarity with Governor Abba Yusuf and to align with his current political direction.
The lawmakers announced their decision after internal consultations, citing loyalty to the governor and support for his administration as the driving force behind their move.
The announcement followed growing political realignments in the state after recent changes involving the governor.
A total of 22 Honorable members of the hallow chamber were directly involved in defection, the statement said.
The mass exit further reshapes the balance of power in the Kano Assembly and adds momentum to the wider political realignment unfolding in the state ahead of future elections
