Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has ordered the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Engr. Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to step aside following the recent student protest that disrupted activities on the institution’s main campus.
The governor also approved the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the unrest and the breakdown of law and order at the polytechnic.
The panel is chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman. Other members are the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr Mrs Mercy Olufunke Shittu.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ilorin by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the committee has been given two weeks to conclude its assignment and submit a report to the governor.
According to the statement, the panel is expected to examine the remote and immediate causes of the protest, review how the situation was handled, and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. It will also make broader recommendations aimed at improving the growth and stability of the institution.
“The governor has meanwhile directed the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to immediately step aside from his role until further notice, while the most senior Deputy Rector acts in his place in the interim.
“The committee will engage with all relevant stakeholders in the course of its assignment,” the commissioner said.
