Alhaji Kamilu Salami, the Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, who was abducted by bandits 25 days ago while on his farm, has been released safely.
The community erupted in joy following the monarch’s return late Tuesday night. Residents flocked to the palace to celebrate and congratulate the royal family on his safe homecoming.
A spokesperson for the community, Ayinla Lawal, confirmed the release, revealing that a substantial ransom, paid in two instalments solely by community members, secured the monarch’s freedom. He explained that neither the local nor the state government assisted in the ordeal.
Lawal said, “Our elders requested that we keep the ransom amount confidential, but it was indeed significant. It took time because the community bore the entire burden. Above all, we thank God for his safe return and appreciate the support from everyone.”
To prevent future attacks, more vigilantes and hunters have been recruited to protect the community. This security boost is expected to encourage displaced residents to return.
The monarch was taken to Ilorin on Wednesday morning for urgent medical care. His younger brother, Aliyu, who personally delivered the ransom payments, shared his fears about dealing with the bandits, describing their elusive and mobile location in the forested terrain of Kwara State.
Aliyu said, “Their hideout is so remote, it’s hard to believe it’s still within Kwara. They never stay in one place and communicate with me through the monarch’s phone to arrange meetings. At times, I was too scared to go, but as the monarch’s brother, I was encouraged to persevere. Thankfully, I was never harmed, and now Kabiesi is safe.”
Attempts to speak with the monarch have been unsuccessful as he is resting at the hospital. Aliyu noted, “You cannot speak to Kabiesi until he has had some days to recover.”
