The deaths of twin babies in Lagos after receiving a wrongful injection at Ajangbadi Primary Health Care have prompted the Elegant Nurses Forum to demand an immediate investigation.
The forum clarified that the injection was given by a Community Health Extension Worker rather than a certified nurse.
The incident has drawn attention to weaknesses in oversight and professional standards within the state’s primary healthcare system. The nurses’ group noted that it had previously raised alarms about poor regulation and negligence at the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board.
The forum stressed that nurses are highly trained to manage patient care safely, while CHEWs are mainly intended for community duties like health education, outreach, and basic support. Assigning tasks outside their training puts patients at serious risk.
The nurses also criticized past practices where CHEWs were placed in leadership positions at PHCs instead of qualified nurses, saying this has undermined healthcare quality and safety across the state.
The Elegant Nurses Forum called on the Lagos State Government to investigate thoroughly, reinforce professional boundaries, and hold those responsible accountable, insisting that patient safety must remain the top priority in healthcare delivery.
