The Lagos State Government has relaunched its “Cash for Trash” programme, urging residents to turn recyclable waste into cash as part of its renewed campaign to promote environmental sustainability and keep the city clean.
The long-running waste-to-wealth initiative, managed by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), offers residents cash incentives in exchange for recyclable items such as plastic bottles, cans, and paper.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement in a statement and video shared on his X handle on Monday. He explained that the programme rewards residents every Thursday when they bring sorted recyclable materials to designated collection points.
“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen! We’re rewarding residents every Thursday for helping us keep Lagos clean and green. It’s a win for your wallet and a win for our city! Get involved and see the value in your waste,” Wahab stated.
The accompanying video showed LAWMA agents collecting and weighing recyclables on portable scales and giving cash rewards to participants.
According to the commissioner, the initiative is part of the state’s wider strategy to reduce waste pollution, encourage recycling habits, and mitigate the effects of climate change. He urged Lagosians to embrace the programme as both an economic and environmental opportunity that benefits individuals and the city as a whole.
