Mr May D’s appearance at the Hushpuppi Cup Opening Ceremony in Oworonshoki, Lagos, has sparked widespread discussion online.
A video from the event shows the singer performing directly on bare sand, without a podium, for a small audience of men seated on plastic chairs. At one point, enthusiastic fans crowded around him, prompting his bodyguards to intervene and maintain order.
Many social media users criticized the scene, describing it as a sharp contrast to the heights of his career, recalling when he headlined major shows and collaborated with top artists. They argued that the modest setting, typically reserved for up-and-coming or street performers, highlighted how far his career seems to have declined.
Others, however, came to May D’s defense, noting that every artist experiences different phases and that performing at a grassroots event does not diminish his past achievements or talent.
