Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American officer in the U.S. Navy, has made history with his recent promotion to Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Commander of Task Force 65, stationed in Rota, Spain.
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria celebrated his remarkable achievement, highlighting his journey from being the first Nigerian-American to command the guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey to now leading a major destroyer squadron and task force in Europe.
In a Twitter post, the mission praised Ndukwe as an inspiring example of #AmericanExcellence, noting his historic role and leadership.
Ndukwe first gained recognition in April 2021 when he became the first Nigerian-American to command the USS Halsey (DDG-97). Throughout his extensive naval career, he has served aboard various vessels such as the USS Devastator and held senior positions at sea and within Navy personnel command.
His promotion marks a significant milestone for Nigerian-Americans and highlights the increasing impact of the diaspora in international military leadership.
