NIMC To Begin NIN Registration
The National Identity Management Commission has announced that ward level enrolment for the National Identification Number will begin nationwide on February 16, 2026.
The move follows a presidential directive to expand access and take registration closer to communities.
In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the commission said the exercise is aimed at capturing every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children, into the National Identity Database.
It added that the registration will be carried out free of charge.
NIMC explained that the initiative is designed to reduce the stress of travelling long distances to enrolment centres and to promote wider participation.
Consultations are ongoing with state governments, local authorities, traditional rulers and community groups to ensure a smooth rollout.
The commission urged those yet to register to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that enrolment figures had already risen to 122 million as of July 2025.
It also said cases of extortion and unofficial charges in the process have dropped significantly in recent years.
